There has been an increase in the number of web based travel agents offering cruises at discounted prices; while this is great from a consumer’s point of view for comparing prices to ensure that you are getting the best possible deal, there are some things to look out for especially when booking on overseas web based sites.
Cruise Lines are always releasing specials, and these come with various terms and conditions. As cruises are sold worldwide they are promoted differently in each country to appeal to the local market, ie a European Cruise sold in the South Pacific may include a free or reduced airfare to assist with the extra cost of flights to Europe, whereas the same cruise sold out of the UK, may include a Free Cabin Upgrade and or an onboard credit.
Resident only specials are also offered and are valid only in certain countries, to qualify for the offer the passenger must be a resident of that country. There have been incidents where online travel agents have not passed this information onto clients booking from abroad. When asked for proof of residency when boarding passengers can either be denied boarding or asked to pay the difference in the fare if they do not have the correct visas or passports.
The cost of communication, time difference and bank fees for transfers or credit card processing fees should also be factored in. And of course you don’t where your money is going, so again make sure anyone you deal with is a bonded travel agent so you know your money is secure.
Be careful who you book with – if you have any doubts that they are not providing you with all the correct information, or if you provide information that you are not comfortable with, then please check with a local agent. Cruise Factor has staff that have been in the cruise industry for over 16 years and they will ensure that your booking is handled in a safe and efficient manner.
